By Miracle and Muscle – Some new Products in 2022

Today is a significant day in the MOCKE Paddling story.

It’s a good day because I get to tell you about 4 new products. And not just any new products; 4 new products that I firmly believe in and absolutely love.

It’s a significant day because getting these products to the market over the last 2 years has been a journey worthy of writing a book.

The Miracle and the Muscle

It has taken over 2 years of development, through some of the most radical global disruptions we’ve seen; with many hours in the design room, zoom room and blue room (the sea ;-). Each product going through several iterations and sampling; every version taking multiple hours, days, weeks; phone calls and emails and coffee table discussions; until finally, after edging closer and closer to the final product, we could place an order and start manufacturing.

But the story doesn’t end there. That’s only the Prologue and Chapter one. Now is when the tale truly begins – Chapter Two…. the Money chapter!

Oh my, talk about living in a real-life suspense novel!

When you bootstrap a business and it comes to financing growth and development, you learn to live on the edge of your seat. Managing cash flow and finding finance are not for the faint-hearted or double minded.

It’s a sure way to get a thick skin and learn perseverance.

It’s a lesson in sticking to a vision.

Finding the money to pay for all this has been a tale from one paradox to the next as the days of stress and payment deadlines are balanced, and finally outweighed, by the days of miracle and favour.

It has been said that if a man should learn to pray, let him go to sea.
Well, I’m adding to that statement.

If a man should learn to pray, let him start and grow a business.
And pray I did. Lots of it.

Generally, our understanding of miracles is that they are singular and radical moments where the impossible happens. But this overlooks how many miracles work, the miracles that happen because of process, not singular and radical, but plural and seemingly ordinary.

In the words of one of my Pastors: “God won’t do by miracle what we must do by muscle.” It’s here where we can unearth myriads of miracles that happen daily. It’s a process of muscle and miracle.

These kinds of miracles are a culmination of many smaller moments that involve people and relationships, conversations, decisions and actions – “Yesses and Nos”. Small Yes miracles mixed in with bits of muscling, all in perfect timing and inter-personal favour, that finally come together into one final “tah-dah”! Each moment a small one, but each moment oh so very significant.

For me this process of miracle moments led to many soul-searching days. Questions like if it was worth it, if it was it necessary, would people support it, how do we finance it, am I still on the right track etc. etc etc.

All these thoughts keep will keep flooding one’s mind, especially when cash is tight. And, if I’m playing open cards here, keeping the negative thoughts out is sometimes pretty tough. And every time it feels like it’s too much….BOOM…a small miracle moment happens.

Ultimately what kept me, and us as a team forging ahead, was to keep thinking about why we we’re doing this. The reason is for those paddlers, new and experienced, out there on the water, grinding it out, morning and evening, to be better today than they were yesterday. Thinking about how these new products are going to help them stay safe and perform to the best of their ability.

Because that is the underlying principle at MOCKE. The pursuit of passion and purpose in the most excellent and inspired way: in our products; for our customers; and within ourselves.

So, it is with an overwhelming sense of joy and excitement that I would like to introduce you to our new products today.

When creating the Flow Personal Floatation Devices our aim was to create performance lifejackets perfect for today’s watersports enthusiast and athlete. I am proud to bring you 2 new personal floatation devices which I am confident will become leaders in the field of performance PFDs.

The Gust Paddling Jacket.

One of the motivational quotes that floats around the Mocke engine room is: “We are not fair-weather athletes.” In producing the Gust paddling jacket we had this quote in mind, to provide a piece of apparel to our clients that they will always reach for when choosing what to wear for their next session, especially if conditions are going to be chillier, windier or wetter.
