Which paddling disciplines do you compete in? Eg. Surfski, river marathon, flat-water marathon, flat water sprint, S.U.P etc:
Mainly flat-water marathon and flat water sprint. I had a go at river marathon racing last year on the Berg and had a great time. Hopefully I will get back to SA to race the Berg again and some of the other big river marathons over there.
Favourite race, why?
Devizes to Westminster. It’s a great challenge, 125 miles non-stop. Trying to complete this race as fast as you can takes a huge amount of planning and preparation but the reward is awesome. I have only done the race once and we (Lizzie Broughton and myself) were the first mixed K2 to ever win the race.
What about paddling keeps you paddling?
I love the water and working hard. The challenge of racing and the competition keeps me paddling. I’m lucky to have a dedicated training group to keep pushing me in every session.
Were (or are you) a champ at any other sport?
In the past I have played rugby and taken part in ultra-endurance running, but only for fun or to help my training.
Why paddling above other sports?
When I first started paddling I was able to go to the canoe club meet up with friends and go out training. It’s a great sport, whenever I want to get out on the water I can just grab my boat. Living in England it’s important to enjoy paddling in all weathers, but paddling sits above other sports especially when the sun is out.
Greatest paddling achievement ( or top 3!)
National Marathon K1 Champion 2015. First mixed K2 to win the Devizes to Westminster race. 7th K1 2014 World Championships
Most memorable life achievement outside of paddling:
Learning to do a backwards somersault. It’s pointless but impressive.
What is your favourite MOCKE product, why?
The PFD is great and made a big difference on the 125 mile DW, but I find the shorts the best Mocke product, they are comfortable and importantly, they are hard wearing. I get through a lot of miles in my boat and having the right shorts is important.
